Shannon and I came up on this terrible collision maybe 30 seconds after it happened. We saw smoke all over our side of the interstate as traffic was slowing down. I’d guess we were about 25-30 cars back from the mess. At least 8 rescue trucks came by, several fire trucks and ambulances, lotsa police. We knew it was really bad. We sat for 45 minutes before we got to a spot where we could turn around on the interstate and head back toward Huntsville.
The 45 minute delay put us in B’ham at exactly 5:00. Dark, pouring rain, and total gridlock. Drive a few feet, stop. Drive a few feet, stop again. WTF?!?! How could anyone want to live in that city?!
Ummmm…just to clarify: I’m not trying to compare our “hardship” of being delayed and caught in heavy traffic and rain to someone being killed in an accident.
Eveybody please slow down. Be careful. Particularly in the rain. Especially when vehicles are barreling head-on toward you on the wrong side of the highway.
Oh...the jagerschnitzel. Shannon had called me from the office and said she'd be out around 2:30. Just about the time I knew she'd be coming down to the car, I realized I should visit a restroom before we headed back to Montgomery. At my age, these visits are often emergency runs...as in get there very quickly! I left her a message to not go to the car unless she had a key...and that I'd be in the lobby soon. Of course she called me from the car, in the drizzling rain, wondering where I was (she never checks her messages.) Anyway, the couple minute delay due to my less than stellar timing and complete lack of control of my bodily functions may have saved us from participating in the collision referred to above. So Shannon can thank my having some German pork and red cabbage at the West End Grille in Huntsville for keeping us alive.
